Walk in Tubs Buyer's Guide

Therapeutic Benefits of a Walk in Tub

What is a walk in tub?Walk in tubs provide many benefits to its owner. One of the most important are the therapeutic benefits that are received, especially over time when used on a regular basis.

Hydrotherapy, otherwise known as water therapy, has been well known for its benefits for centuries.  It is safe and inexpensive and is an easy way to treat many ailments. Water, whether consumed or applied externally is a great way to detoxify the body and replenish it with much needed hydration. Soaking in different temperatures of water can be good for the nervous system and for blood flow which impacts our hearts, lungs, bones and much more. Hydrotherapy can be used to treat inflammation, tendonitis, infection, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, bursitis, scoliosis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, injuries, back pain, and other painful ailments. It’s not only used to treat ailments, it is also well known for preventing them. Studies have shown that water therapy is great for rehabilitation from accidents, traumas, strokes, connective tissue diseases and even asthma and other respiratory related problems. Because hydrotherapy increases blood circulation, it can help strengthen the immune system, give you more energy and improve the way you feel overall. It also reduces the effects of stress, reduces pain, improves sleep, prevents headaches, and has been found to improve blood sugar, lower blood pressure and potentially help to treat depression. Walk in tubs are often deeper than a traditional tub offering you a more immersive and comfortable bath which makes hydrotherapy in a walk in tub ideal.

In addition to the many hydrotherapy benefits, you will also enjoy the benefit of massage therapy in your walk in tub as they typically come with some type of whirlpool/Jacuzzi option- jet and/or air bubble. Massage therapy has also been well known for its many health benefits. Not only can massage therapy help with pain management and relaxation, it also calms the nervous system, reduces stress, tension and anxiety, helps detoxify your body by stimulating your lymphatic system and helps improve blood circulation. Air bubbles are a gentle way of getting a light touch massage in your bath. Soft bubbles of air are blown into the bath from the bottom of the tub and float to the top of the tub gently massaging your entire body. Jets provide a more vigorous, focused massage as water sprays out of the jets which are strategically placed throughout your tub to hit specific areas such as your neck, shoulders, back, arms, hips, legs and feet. Some walk in tubs offer the ability to have both jet and air massage so that you can enjoy a softer light touch massage, a more forceful and focused massage or you can choose to have both in your bath at the same time. Other walk in tubs may offer options like the ability to fill your tub part way so that you can get a massage on a specific lower body area such as your legs and feet.

Some additional therapeutic benefits of a walk in tub are some of the newer options that some manufacturers have more recently added to their repertoire such as chromatherapy, which is otherwise known as color and light therapy. Color and light are well known for affecting our mood. Color therapy is believed to go back as far as ancient times and is historically linked to ancient Indian, Chinese and Egyptian medicine. The sun has been used for medicinal purposes as far back as ancient Greece. Whether light is natural or artificial, it has been found to treat many disorders. It has been used throughout the ages for healing purposes. Lack of light, such as living in an area with little sun exposure, can cause depression and increase rates of suicide. Certain colors or lack of color (white) can bring on anxiety and feelings of tension. Through color and light therapy, you can enhance your mood, remove tension and anxiety and even notice more extreme changes in your body, mind and spirit. Colors can have a positive and negative effect so specific essential colors are deemed more necessary for the healing process and those colors are used in walk in tubs. The same goes with light, too much light or too little light can have a negative effect. It is specific amounts of light and how it is projected through the water that offers the most healing and the best balance of energy, which is how it is administered in walk in tubs.

Aromatherapy is often used in spas. We even use it in our own homes when we simply light a candle or put on a lotion or perfume. Aromatherapy is a natural way of healing our bodies, minds and spirits through our sense of smell. Essential oils are used when administering aromatherapy for the purpose of creating wellness and healing. It has been shown that by creating balance in our minds and bodies, that disease can be prevented as well as treated.

It has been found that therapeutic color and light, when combined with aromatherapy and hydrotherapy heighten the effects of treatment. This is why walk in tub owners receive so many benefits, because they can enjoy all of these therapies in one product.

While all of these benefits can be enjoyed by anyone who owns a walk in tub, be aware that there are some precautions that should be taken if you have a condition that can be further complicated or aggravated by utilizing any of these features. If you suffer a chronic condition, are pregnant or not sure if you have a condition, injury or other reason not to utilize one of the features found in a walk in tub, you should consult your physician.
